- 1976-1981 studied political science at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt
- Helped found the Green Party from the mid-1970s. 1981-1983 Frankfurt municipal councillor, 1983-1985 Member of the Bundestag (Foreign Affairs Committee), 1985-1990 Group specialist on foreign and security policy, human rights and eastern Europe. 1990 regained citizenship and appointed to the Council of Advisers by President Vaclav Havel. 1991-2004 Head of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Prague
