Curriculum Vitae

  • After completing his studies and obtaining a Masters in Economics in 1969, he began work as an assistant at the Warsaw School of Planning and Statistics
  • In 1973 he defended his doctoral thesis, and in 1978 qualified as assistant professor of Economics
  • Titular professor at the Warsaw School of Economics since 1990
  • Specialist in the field of macroeconomic policy, European integration, finance and international trade
  • Between 1970 and 1990, he completed a series of traineeships, both at home and abroad, including in France, England, the USA and Hungary
  • He worked as a consultant in the international banking division of Citibank, New York, USA from 1978 to 1979
  • He has on frequent occasions acted as expert to international organisations (UNIDO, World Bank, European Commission, International Labour Organisation)
  • He was visiting professor to the University of Princeton (USA) from 1986 to 1987
  • Founder (1985) and first director of the Institute of World Economy at the Warsaw School of Economics
  • From 1988 to 1991, he was director of the Foreign Trade Research Institute (IKC HZ)
  • From 1989 to 1992, he was a partner in the consultancy firm TKD - Ernst &amp
  • Young Poland
  • From 1991 to 1995, he worked on the European Economy Committee of the UN in Geneva (Switzerland) as head of section for Central and Eastern European countries
  • He was Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland from December 1995 to October 1997
  • From 1998 to 2004 he was a member of the Monetary Policy Council
  • From 1966 to 1990, he belonged to the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR)
  • From 1987 to 1990, he participated in the work of the Committee on Economic Reform, and from 1988 to 1989 he was a member of the team of economic advisors to the Prime Minister
  • From 1994 to 1997, he was a member of the Economic Strategy Committee to the Cabinet
  • Since 1999 he has been a member of the Economic Studies Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences
  • Member of the Polish Economic Society (since 1969), member of the European Economic Association and the European Association of Comparative Economic Studies
  • From 1998 to 2001, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the International Exchange Program (IREX) in Washington
  • From 2001, he was a member of the group of economic advisors to the President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi
  • From 2003 to 2005, he was Rector of the Richard Łazarski University of Commerce and Law in Warsaw
  • Author of over 250 academic publications, including five books, and a number of other publications in Polish, English, Russian and other languages
  • Knight's Cross of the Order of Poland Reborn (1989) and Silver Cross of Merit (1981)
  • Orders of Merit from France, Italy, Greece, Ukraine and Lithuania
