  • Deputy Head of the Foreign Policy Department, Head of the Culture and Ideology Departments of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania (1983-1989)
  • Secretary (1989-1990) of the Independent Communist Party of Lithuania, which freed itself from subordination to Moscow and adopted a social-democratic programme
  • Member of the Supreme Council (Parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania, Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (1990-1992)
