  • From 1968 in political exile in Germany
  • Worked there as an electrical fitter and on the journal 'Gewerkschafter' (Trade Unionist)
  • Member of the Wege 68 Association, publisher of the exiles' journal 'Listy' (Leaves). 1973-1976 Seminar on politics, Frankfurt (adult education) (1973-1976)
  • 1976-1981 studied political science at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt
  • Helped found the Green Party from the mid-1970s. 1981-1983 Frankfurt municipal councillor, 1983-1985 Member of the Bundestag (Foreign Affairs Committee), 1985-1990 Group specialist on foreign and security policy, human rights and eastern Europe. 1990 regained citizenship and appointed to the Council of Advisers by President Vaclav Havel. 1991-2004 Head of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Prague
  • 1998-2000 Bonn office of the Foundation
  • Member of the European Parliament (since 2004)
