La Quadrature du Net publishes regularly articles that must be translated. You will find here few recommendations to help translating:

Guidelines for translators

  • Before starting, it is important to be subscribed to the mailing-list Translation of La Quadrature du Net where are coordinated the different projects.
  • We recommend to translate only only to languages you are native speaker.
  • LQDN's press releases may contain specialised expression, mostly in the legal register. The translation of those expressions may seem weird even to native speakers, nonetheless they must be kept. A glossary of few of those expressions is available hereunder.

For the rest

For texts:

  • The translation and the proof-reading are done on the pads. Each new user has a new color.
  • A translation is considered as complete when it was proofread by a member of La Quadrature du Net.

= For videos:

Conventions

  • To ease collaborative work on the pads, the users are invited to identify their colours above the pad.

Mediawiki Translation Tool

During the summer 2015 we have updated and reorder the whole wiki. We have still to rename a number of pages. Among the number of changes, one is particularly important: the language setting.

Before, the wiki was kinda multi-lingual which was a complication to keep it ordered. So now the root language of if is French and we translate from it.

The new tool to translate is the same used by Wikipedia (if some of you know about it). A page is marked for translation and from there, we can translate if to any language we want.

Pages marked for translation can be found here: https://wiki.laquadrature.net/index.php?title=Sp%C3%A9cial:PageTranslation

The translated page will be displayed as such:

wiki.laquadrature.net/ROOT_PAGE/en (for English translation)

This means no more weird titles and out-of-space links to translated pages (yay!)!

For the modalities of the translation, the whole text in MediaWiki format is divided in different paragraphs to ease the work (and more especially the management of additional text after the translation).

All in all, the tool is very handy and works pretty well. Although it might be a bit confusing at the beginning. Don't hesitate to come to me if you have questions!
